Fresh yeast vs. active dry yeast, choosing the right one for your pizza dough.
fresh yeast
It allows you to mix all the ingredients directly without needing to create a sponge or starter every time. It activates quickly helping your dough to rise faster.
When the temperatures are high, add it 5 minutes before finishing the kneading process to prevent early fermentation and Maintain the dough texture.
active dry yeast
If fresh yeast isn’t available active dry yeast works just as well. For this recipe use 1 teaspoon of active dry yeast instead of 1 tablespoon of fresh yeast. To activate it, dissolve the active dry yeast in warm water, let it sit for 10 minutes until bubbles form on the surface. This ensures the yeast is active and ready to use.
How to shape an adorable piggy pizza
If you are making this adorable piggy pizza recipe, here is how to shape it creatively and customize it to your liking. Follow these steps to ensure your pizza looks as adorable as it is delicious.
Body and head:
Start by shaping the dough into a large round ball for the animals body. For the head, make a slightly smaller ball and stuff it with mozzarella cheese for a gooey surprise when baked.
Ears and tail:
Use two small dough balls for the ears. Initially we shaped them like bunny ears but you can adjust to match your animal design. Pig ears would be round and flat. For the tail form a spiral or tiny ball.
paws:
Create four small dough balls for the animals paws and arrange them around the body.
toppings for decoration.
- pepperoni: use mini pepperoni slices for the nose, cheeks or details like spots. If you can’t find mini pepperoni, try buying a frozen pepperoni pizza and repurposing the toppings.
- Eyes and facial features, we used melted chocolate to draw eyes, but you can also use sliced black olives, small dots of tomato sauce or any edible item you prefer.

Tips for a perfect animal shaped pizza
- Use room temperature dough for easier shaping. If you leave it in the fridge to proof overnight, make sure you leave it at room temperature for a couple hours before using it.
- Add plenty of cheese to stuffed sections for a gooey and delicious texture.
- Arrange your toppings carefully to bring out the animals facial features and overall look.
- If you are working in a hot environment proof the dough in short intervals to avoid over fermentation.
- Alway preheat the oven before baking the pizza.
RECIPE
Recipe in cups and grams. You can find the cup measurements in the printable recipe scrolling down at the end.
ingredients
dough
- 125 grams water
- 113 grams bread flour
- 113 grams all purpose flour
- 15 grams fresh yeast
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp of extra virgin olive oil
toppings
- 250 grams mozzarella cheese
- 40 grams pepperoni
- 4 tablespoons tomato sauce
- 4 cherry tomatoes
- Oregano
- Basil
step by step
1) step one, prepare the dough ingredient
Sift bread flour and all purpose flour together using a flour sifter or sieve to remove lumps and ensure a smooth texture. Add salt and mix it evenly using a whisk. Add water and extra virgin olive oil to the mixture.
2) step two, knead the dough
Knead the dough four 20 to 25 minutes until it becomes stretchy. Add the fresh yeast during the last 5 minutes of kneading to ensure it doesn’t proof too early. Use a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment on medium low speed for convenience.
3) step three, proof the dough
After kneading, it is time to let the dough proof. Place the dough in a clean, lightly oiled bowl and cover with plastic wrap to prevent it from drying out. Leave the dough to proof for about 1 hour in a warm place. The dough should double in size during this time.
4) step four, prepare the crust for the piggy pizza body
Once the dough has proofed, it’s time to shape it into your pizza base and create the adorable pig features. Separate portions of dough to create body parts such as head, tail, ears and paws. Stretch the dough using your hands or a rolling pin to create the round pizza base shape.
Stuff the crust with plenty of shredded mozzarella choice for a cheesy, gooey center.
5) step five, shape the pig pizza design
Stuff the head with shredded mozzarella for a gooey surprise. Create the ears, paws and tail by shaping small dough portions and pressing them gently onto the body to ensure they stay put. Allow the pizza dough to rest for 20 minutes.
We recommend making a fresh, simple tomato sauce to complement your toppings, blend raw tomatoes, pinch of salt and extra virgin olive oil, add oregano. Spread it evenly over the pizza base, and add cherry tomatoes, pepperoni slices and mozzarella cheese as toppings.
6) step six, bake your adorable pizza
Preheat your oven to 200ºC (390ºF), bake the pizza for 15 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. You can bake it longer if you want it more golden brown but we recommend a lighter bake for the best look. For added charm, decorate the eyes with melted chocolate or food coloring to give your pig pizza personality.
