Nutella Desserts

The base for this recipe is our classic chocolate chip cookie, which originated many recipes like Ferrero-inspired cookies, Raffaello, S’mores caramel cookie bars, or brookies. I love preparing Nutella desserts at home; they’re always very easy to prepare and satisfying, not to mention delicious.

We have made so many Nutella recipes lately, rolls, chocolate & Nutella, crunch cakes, that we started collecting the jars for storage.

If you are looking for a dessert that is super chocolatey and tasty you found it!

Key Steps to Make Nutella and M&M cookie pies

Many steps can turn this cake from delicious to perfect. From the way you burn butter to the baking time, everything matters when making a cookie pie dessert, but there are some things that matter more than others.

  1. Brown butter: making perfect brown butter is easier than you think, really. You don’t need to dedicate a lot of time to eating or knowing a lot about baking & cooking, but when you do brown butter wrong, it can do either nothing to your recipe or make it bitter. We love brown butter here, and we use it a lot in Nutella, Ferrero, Nutella & strawberries brownies.
  2. Chill time: When you chill cookie dough, you let the flavors develop, and the M&M Nutella pie becomes even better
  3. Preparing the cookie dough: Overmixing your homemade M&M cookie dough will lead to cakey cookies or, in this case, pies. Make sure to mix the cookie dough just until combined.

Grab These Ingredients

Most ingredients you will find in many of our cookie recipes, too, white chocolate and coconut, Ferrero, M&M cookies, and even M&M and Nutella cookies.

  • Sugar: We are using both granulated and brown sugar. One is to achieve crispy edges while the other is for a chewy cookie.
  • Eggs: room temperature, so they can easily be incorporated into the cookie dough.
  • Butter: unsalted is my preferred choice, I’ll always choose it even in Nutella crepe rolls, Raffaello tiramisu, and brownie rolls.
  • Baking soda: a leavening agent for this recipe.
  • All-purpose flour: provides structure to the cookie pies.
  • Salt: one of the most often forgotten ingredients in desserts, salt not only balances the sweetness but also enhances the flavors, making this M&M and Nutella dessert better. We never skip salt in our Nutella pancakes, Twix tiramisu, and Nutella donuts.
  • Nutella: You will need it to fill each of the cookie pies. You can use your favorite chocolate hazelnut spread; this recipe doesn’t specifically require you to use the brand Nutella, like in strawberry & Nutella brownies would.
  • M&M: They will add a nice color and crunch to the pies. I prefer using the mini-sized.

How to Make Brown Butter for Cookies

We love brown butter here; we always use it! in cookie fries, double chocolate cookies, and sea salt caramel cookies. We love it so much we dedicated a whole post to it.

What’s brown butter? brown butter is when you cook the butter until golden brown color or deep amber, the milk solids caramelize, and it gives a nice nutty aroma and caramelization, perfect for so many recipes.

Every time I see a recipe, trust me, I’ll attempt to make it with brown butter, and 99% of the time, it gives a way better result.

You will brown butter by melting the butter in a light colored saucepan, stirring constantly over medium-low heat. Butter goes through different stages, from solid to melted, melted to bubbly and then the bubbling becomes more intense then resulting perfect brown butter.

Cookie Variations

This cookie dough is perfect for any variations or swaps. We used it for protein pistachio cookies, Kit Kat, and even S’mores cookies. While some other recipes require a different cookie base, like our tiramisu cookie, most of the cookie recipes posted on our site follow the same base recipe.

Some swaps you could do to this recipe:

  • Add nuts and chocolate: the chocolate will elevate the cookie with more melted chocolate pockets, and the almonds provide a very nice crunch.
  • Caramel candy: biting into each cookie pie and tasting an amazing caramel piece, amazing.
  • For Christmas, you can prepare this same recipe but using Christmas-themed M&Ms like green and red and make it a more festive treat like our M&M Christmas cookies.
  • Pretzel and chocolate: adds a nice crunch to this recipe and saltiness, which is sometimes really good to mix sweet with savory.

You can also prepare cheesecakes with this cookie dough recipe. We have made it into a Valentine’s Day cheesecake and a Christmas sugar cookie one. I love making everything holiday themed!

Best Tips to Make Cookie Pies at Home

You can easily prepare these M&M cookie pies at home, but if you follow our best tips and tricks, it will become even easier to do.

  • When you brown the butter, it’s important you do it over medium-low heat, and stir constantly; if the butter burns, it will add a bitter taste to the pie.
  • Don’t overmix the cookie dough; overmixing leads to cakey cookies.
  • Let the cookie dough chill for at least 15 minutes before you scoop it into the pies. It makes it easier to work with and also helps with the flavors.
  • Bake the cookie pies following the suggested time, but also knowing your own oven, all ovens are different, and it might be done a little before or a little earlier. Always check 1-2 minutes before the specified time in the recipe card.
  • Don’t over-bake the cookie pies; they will have time to set in the same ramekin and have the perfect texture. But if you love overbaked super-crunchy cookies, then do.

We love preparing cookie pies at home. We recently made a s’mores scoopable version, and it was so fun to prepare.

Best Way to Freeze Cookie Dough

You can prepare cookie dough and then freeze it, and that is the best way to have fresh cookies or fresh cookie pies every time. For each pie, you will need about 2 1/2 scoops, approximately. You can freeze it already built as a cookie pie, or only the cookie dough to choose.

  • Freeze cookie dough: using a large scoop, scoop the M&M cookie dough into a freezing tray lined with parchment paper, make sure to keep some separation between each of the scoops, and then freeze for 3 hours. Transfer into a freezer container and keep in the freezer for up to 3 months. Bake from frozen.
  • Freeze in a ramekin: following the same recipe from the recipe card, build the cookie pie; instead of baking, we will freeze it. We are using this method in our deep-dish Nutella brownies, too. Cover with aluminum foil and bake from frozen whenver is needed.

Serving Suggestion

These M&M Nutella Cookie pies will give you the cutest pies to serve individually; they are baked in the same ramekins, which makes it ideal to portion. I recommend it be served warm with an ice cream scoop on top.

M&M Nutella Cookie pies

Recipe by Archersfood

Delicious M&M Nutella cookie pies, this easy Nutella dessert is made with a cookie dough built in a ramekin, filled with Nutella. The edges are crispy and the center soft, with a molten Nutella interior.

  • Total Time0 hours
  • Yield4 cookie pies

Ingredients

COOKIE DOUGH

  • 1 cup (230 g) unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1/3 cup (68 g) light brown sugar
  • ½ cup (140 g) granulated sugar
  • ¼ tsp (1.5 g) fine sea salt
  • 2 eggs, medium-sized, room temperature
  • 2 1/2 tsp (10 g) baking soda
  • 2 2/3 cups (320 g) all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup (108 g) mini-M&Ms

NUTELLA FILLING

  • 8 tbsp (128 g) Nutella, room temperature

Instructions

  1. To prepare M&M Nutella Cookie Pies at home, start by preparing the cookie dough. In a light colored pan, brown 1 cup (230 g) unsalted room temperature butter. Start by melting it over medium-low heat, making sure to stir as you melt it. Once the butter is melted, it will start to bubble, the bubbling becomes more intense, and you will notice how the milk solids start to brown. Keep stirring. When the butter becomes golden brown or deep amber, turn off the stove and set it aside. Let the butter cool for 10-15 minutes.
  2. In a mixing bowl, add the cooled brown butter, with 1/3 cup (68 g) light brown sugar, ½ cup (140 g) granulated sugar, and ¼ tsp (1.5 g) fine sea salt. Mix it very well using a whisk for 2-3 minutes.
  3. Add 2 medium-sized room-temperature eggs and mix again. Add 2 tsp (10 g) of baking soda and 2 2/3 cups (320 g) of all-purpose flour. Fold it using a spatula and then add ½ cup (108 g) mini M&Ms, or your preferred M&Ms.
  4. Let the cookie dough chill for 15 minutes. Prepare a tray with 4 ramekins in it.
  5. Preheat the oven to 355F (180 °C).
  6. Prepare the cookie pies; each cookie pie will need about 2 ½ cookie scoops, approximately, depending on how big your cookie scoop is. Divide the cookie dough into 8 equal portions to make it easier. On each of the ramekins, place one portion of cookie dough and flatten it, bringing it slightly to the sides. Add about 2 tbsp (32 g) of Nutella into each of the ramekins. Flatten the 4 cookie dough left into disks and cover the Nutella with it. I like to do some dents in the cookie dough, so it has more texture after baking.
  7. Bake the cookie pies in the preheated oven for 15 to 18 minutes. Remove from the oven and let them cool slightly, about 10 minutes, before enjoying.

Notes

It’s important that the butter is at room temperature so it doesn’t splatter everywhere; frozen or cold butter can splash a lot, and you can easily get burnt with it.

You can add more decorative M&Ms after they bake; this way, they will look amazing! We do this trick in many of our cookie recipes, like our chocolate chip and double chocolate.

Some people love to add some flaky salt on top of the Nutella and M&M pies after baking!
