This Funfetti tiramisu is so fun to prepare and perfect to celebrate a birthday or special occasion.

Birthday-themed foods are the best foods you can make; they’re so fun and colorful. Recently, we made a Funfetti cinnamon roll recipe that was super fun to prepare, and let me say, it was DELICIOUS.

This recipe was made a couple of days ago, and I forgot to share it with all of you. Every day is someone’s birthday, so let’s celebrate it with a delicious tiramisu.

This easy recipe is gelatin free, coffee free and perfect for kids or people of all ages.

Birthday desserts

We have been wanting to make so many birthday-themed desserts just because they’re so fun to make. Sadly, we can only do one more recipe as they don’t sell birthday sprinkles here.

Add to your shopping list!

Most of the ingredients are very easy to find. I know in some countries finding mascarpone cheese is a little difficult; you can sub by using cream cheese. The texture and flavor will change SLIGHTLY.

Another thing you can have trouble finding might be birthday confetti, which I do have trouble finding, but you can probably find any other Funfetti you like. (I have to say they sell it in so many places, I just don’t like pastel birthday confetti, which is sadly the one they sell everywhere in my country!).

  • Mascarpone cheese: it’s an Italian type of cheese with a similar texture to normal cream cheese. It changes the flavor slightly. It’s used to prepare many desserts.
  • Cream cheese: we need it to mix with the mascarpone so we can have the perfect texture.
  • Heavy whipping cream: make sure it has at least 35% fat content. You need to whip it to medium peaks. This will help stabilize the tiramisu.
  • Powdered sugar: also known as icing sugar, it’s a very fine type of sugar that you can make yourself by blending granulated sugar until fine powder. They normally overprice it at stores, so making it yourself is much easier.
  • Funfetti or birthday cake confetti (edible): needed to decorate the tiramisu and add into layers.
  • Milk: to soak the ladyfingers until soft.
  • Ladyfingers: they’re sponge-like biscuits that we use in many desserts.
  • Vanilla extract: We will add it to the tiramisu mixture.

Tips to make the best tiramisu

  • Don’t over-mix the mascarpone cheese; it’s very delicate, and if you over-mix it, it will curdle. Try to use room temperature mascarpone, so it’s easier to work with.
  • When you whip the heavy whipping cream, use a clean, dry, and cold bowl and whisk. You can put the bowl in the freezer for 10 minutes so it’s very cold (dry it after to remove any humidity left).
  • Chill the tiramisu long enough, or it might collapse. Any no-bake dessert requires a period of resting in the fridge, so it has time to set, and get the flavors to kind of know each other. If you rush the process, it won’t taste the same and will also be a melted mess.
  • The Funfetti might color the tiramisu; if you are sensitive to some colors in the food, like green or blue, because of mold, you can remove those colors before adding them to the tiramisu.

Ingredients you need at room temperature: cream cheese and mascarpone cheese.

Cold ingredients for this recipe: heavy whipping cream and sprinkles.

Sprinkles tend to melt with heat, which makes them bleed the colors all over the dessert.

  • Having the ingredients you need at the right temperature is very important. This way, the process can be smooth and more enjoyable. To have room temperature ingredients, make sure to leave them on the counter at least 1 hour before you start preparing this recipe. Try to find them a nice warm area that is not too cold.
  • Cold ingredients need to stay in the refrigerator until you use them.

Recipe elaborations and order

  1. Mascarpone cheese and cream cheese in the counter 1 hour before you start.
  2. Whip heavy whipping cream until medium peaks.
  3. Prepare the filling (cream cheese plus mascarpone cheese)
  4. Finish preparing the tiramisu.
  5. Chill.
  6. Refrigerate
  7. Decorate

Key points about this recipe

  • Avoid overmixing the mixture; you want to have a nice and creamy texture on your dessert, not a curdled-looking one.
  • Chilling. Don’t skip the chilling time.

How to assemble a funfetti tiramisu

  1. Start with a layer of ladyfingers soaked in milk.
  2. Add a layer of funfetti.
  3. Tiramisu filling.
  4. Add another layer of funfetti sprinkles.
  5. Another of tiramisu filling.
  6. Decorate with sprinkles.

How to fix overmixed heavy cream

Over-whipped cream can be fixed only at the medium peaks or stiff peaks point; after that, there’s no point of return. It has happened to everyone: you get distracted for a second, and the cream goes from medium peaks to stiff when you don’t even need them to be stiff peaks.

  • Option 1. Remove about ¼ part of the cream and warm it up until it turns liquid. Slowly fold it into the whipped cream.
  • Option 2. Add heavy whipping cream that has not been whipped. I’d recommend starting from ¼ of the total weight of the cream you have whipped and going from there.
  • Option 3. Combine both options.

You mustn’t whisk the cream anymore, and you only use a spatula to slowly and carefully fold the cream.

Grab the next tools

  • Mixing bowls: have different-sized bowls, which will be useful to weigh ingredients or different steps in this dessert.
  • Whisk, stand mixer, or hand electric mixer: I prefer using a stand mixer to whip the heavy whipping cream as it’s so much faster, and I can have it ready while I prepare the rest of the recipe.
  • Spatulas: I love having a hard spatula for working the cream cheese or mascarpone and then a softer one for folding ingredients and scraping the sides of the bowl. (wooden spatula and silicone spatula!)
  • A square pan: Use one with a removable bottom if you can find it; it will make the job much easier. We are using an 8-inch 20cm square pan. If you don’t have one with a removable bottom, use a normal square pan, line it with parchment paper, make sure you use a strong one, not one that melts easily when it’s wet; the parchment paper will be useful to pull the tiramisu out of the pan without breaking it.
  • Offset spatula: we will smooth out the tiramisu for neat, even layers.

How to decorate a Funfetti tiramisu

For this tiramisu, we kept it pretty simple; we sprinkled some edible birthday confetti all over the top, and we love it this way. It makes it fast and easy to prepare. If you want to be more creative, you can try different decorations

  1. Add a white chocolate ganache on top and sprinkle some Funfetti.
  2. Swirls of whipped cream, who doesn’t love whipped cream?
  3. Chocolate drizzle.

How to store a Funfetti tiramisu

This tiramisu dessert must be refrigerated at all times. It can last up to 3 days in the fridge. Keep in mind that the colors from the Funfetti will start bleeding and staining parts of the tiramisu as time goes by.

The right storing temperature for a dairy dessert is 4 °C or under (39F). If the temperature on your fridge is higher than that it’s at a higher risk of growing bacteria and is unsafe to eat.

Freezing a Funfetti tiramisu?

I personally won’t recommend you do that as it has colorings from the sprinkles, and when defrosting, they would bleed all over the tiramisu. If you actually freeze it I recommend you decorate it after being thawed and before serving.

And that’s the whole recipe! If you tried this recipe, I would highly appreciate any review you want to give us. Select the stars and then add a little comment. Any review can help us so much.

Description

Delicious creamy birthday tiramisu, made with Funfetti for a more colorful celebration.

Ingredients

MILK

  • 1 ¼ cups (300 ml) milk
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar

TIRAMISU FILLING

  • 1 cup (235 ml) heavy whipping cream
  • 2 cups (500 g) mascarpone cheese, room temperature
  • Slightly over ½ cup (125 g) full-fat cream cheese, room temperature
  •           1 2/3 cups (200 g) powdered sugar

ASSEMBLE

  • 13 ladyfingers for the first layer
  • 2 tbsp Funfetti sprinkles over
  • 13 ladyfingers for the next layer
  • 2 tbsp Funfetti sprinkles

DECORATE

  • 4 tbsp Funfetti sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Start by preparing the milk mixture to soak the ladyfingers. In a pot, combine 1 ¼ cups (300ml) of milk with 2 tbsp granulated sugar. Warm it up until it all combines, and the sugar has melted. Let it cool slightly.
  2. In a stand mixer bowl, weigh 1 cup (235ml) of heavy whipping cream. Use the whisk attachment and whip on high speed until you reach medium peaks.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine 2 cups (500g) room temperature mascarpone cheese and slightly over ½ cup (125g) full-fat room temperature cream cheese. Use a wooden spatula or a hard spatula to work them together. Add 1 2/3 cups (200g) powdered sugar. Fold in the whipped cream.
  4. Assemble the Funfetti tiramisu. Soak the ladyfingers, one by one, with the milk mixture we prepared earlier. For the first layer, we will need about 13 ladyfingers and 2 tbsp of Funfetti. Add half of the mascarpone mixture and smooth out, add another layer of 2 tbsp of Funfetti. Repeat with another layer of soaked ladyfingers, we are going to use 13, and the rest of the mascarpone filling. Smooth out and refrigerate for at least 8 hours, covered with plastic wrap.
  5. To decorate, sprinkle 4 tbsp of Funfetti first on the sides and then the rest all over the cake.
